From that gut-punch of an opening, the film launches into a wild, funny, deeply human adventure that somehow gets better every time you watch it.
The story follows Carl Fredricksen, a grumpy 78-year-old widower who ties thousands of balloons to his house and floats off to South America to fulfill a promise he made to his late wife. Ed Asner voices Carl with such warmth and gruffness that you fall for him almost immediately, even when he's being difficult. He's joined by Russell, an earnest young Wilderness Explorer voiced by Jordan Nagai, and together they make one of the most unlikely and lovable duos in movie history.
What Pixar pulled off here is genuinely remarkable. Up works as a kids' adventure — there are talking dogs, a colorful villain, a giant exotic bird named Kevin — but it also works as a meditation on grief, purpose, and what it means to truly live your life.
