Extended Observations

The Milwaukee M12 ratchet earns its spot on the truck — compact enough to reach where your hand can't, strong enough to actually finish the job before lunch.

I've been turning wrenches since before cordless tools were worth a damn. Back then you had a breaker bar and patience. Now I keep this Milwaukee M12 3/8" ratchet clipped to my belt on every HVAC rough-in and electrical panel job I take. It's not a novelty. It earns its keep.

The size is the whole story here. I'm threading bolts in junction boxes, behind water heaters, inside tight mechanical chases — places where a full-size impact wrench is a joke and your hand cramps up after the third fastener. This thing fits. The head profile is slim enough that it clears obstructions I'd otherwise be fighting for ten minutes with a standard ratchet. That translates directly to time, and time is money on every job.

Torque is rated around 35 ft-lbs. That's not going to break loose a rusted suspension bolt, and I'm not pretending otherwise. But for assembly work, electrical panel mounting, ductwork brackets, light mechanical — it handles everything I throw at it without hesitation. The variable speed trigger gives you real control. You're not just mashing a button and hoping; you can feather it in tight spots and go full send when the fastener is running free.

Battery life on the M12 platform is solid. I've been running Milwaukee M12 for years — the same batteries power my inspection light, my hackzall, my PVC cutter. One platform, one charger, no excuses. The 2457-20 is a bare tool, so if you're already in the M12 ecosystem, this is a no-brainer add. Drop it in the bag and go.

Two things I'll flag honestly. First, the 35 ft-lbs ceiling means this is a finishing and assembly tool, not a primary removal tool for anything that's been sitting. Second, it ships bare — no battery, no charger. If you're new to M12, factor that cost in. Neither issue changes my recommendation. This ratchet has saved me hours on jobs where the old way would've been knuckle-busting hand work. It rides in my bag every single day.

Our Verdict

The Milwaukee M12 ratchet earns its spot on the truck — compact enough to reach where your hand can't, strong enough to actually finish the job before lunch.

This is a well-made tool. I previously purchased a counterfeit version that failed when the 3/8 drive head broke. The Milwaukee version has proven reliable without any issues.
